No Child Left Behind says we must educate all students. Our states say we must educate all students. Our districts say we must educate all students. But no matter what any government entity says, we should educate all students because it's the right thing to do! Solutions, etc. firmly believes that all students can learn. The trick is finding a teacher that is able to reach, motivate, and inspire them. Not all students learn the same way. Their backgrounds and individual characteristics greatly impact their academic success. However, all students are capable of success. No one's background or characteristics should permit a teacher or a school to presume that success is beyond reach. High standards and classroom success must be our goals for all students. That having been said, there are some students that are more difficult to teach than others. As teachers we often get discouraged with the effort level and attitude we see in some of our students. However, we need to realize the incredible power we have in a child's life. While we may not solve all their problems, we can enable them to learn. It has been said that we can lead a horse to water, but we can't make him drink. Solutions, etc. believes, though, we can make him thirsty. We can teach him how to properly drink water. We can show him the benefits of drinking water. We can make drinking water fun. We can demonstrate drinking water. We can make drinking water relevant and exciting. That is the power of the teacher. Solutions, etc. workshops on Teaching At-Risk Learners are designed to transform teachers into motivators. We focus first on the attitudes and beliefs necessary to reach the hard-to-reach. Then we offer strategies and ideas that have been tested with success in actual classrooms. |
